Rook by animalartist16 Rook by animalartist16
Omg I still do traditional?!? Hopefully now that we moved I can do more lol, but yeah, I'm kinda rusty with it and there's a ton of things I wish I could have done better on, but at least it isn't as much of a disaster as I thought it would turn out to be...
Anyways, this is my old character, Rook, who was my first Valkodrake character. They all need new refs and will get one eventually, but idk when.
Did this using only colored pencils, no refs.

Gorgeous colors and design! :love: Your fur texture is incredible and i love how you integrated the blues, yellows, green and purples into it! Really amazing job, and very inspiring^^

Out of curiosity, what kind of paper and pencils do you use? I'm trying to find some smoother papers to be able to make my own textures like you have here, and I'm also looking into purchasing some pencils (i currently have prisma. They're great, they just break too much lol).

Thank you so much! ;u; <3

I used plain white cardstock you can buy in walmart, and I use Prismacolors too. They do break a lot haha, but I like how smooth they are. I'd love to get some other kind of pencils to use with them, but I haven't been able to yet. There's so many art materials I'd love to have, yet can't choose which to prioritize when we actually can afford some lol.

Thank you! :hug: That card stock i have heard of before. A lot of students at my school use it for their assignments. I'll have to go and pick some up to try it out. Right now i mainly use Canson Fanboy paper. Its fairly priced for 20 sheets, but it can be tricky to find. It usually runs out within a day of it going on the shelves here.

One of my friends started using faber castell. She says they're a wonderful pencil and that they are much harder to break and also allow for a very detailed line.
I know what you mean :lol: I go into an art store and i forget what i went there for and have a real hard time choosing what i want to pick up. There's tons of great stuff. I wish some of the brands would go on sale more often :P

Any time! The card stock is pretty cheap and it comes with a lot of sheets in a pack, so it's really economical too. I've used bristol before too, but I think I prefer the cardstock. The only thing is it can warp the paper a bit or rip if using watercolors/other liquid medias if you're not careful, but usually it's ok for me, I just put the paper under something heavy after it dries and it flattens it back out. :)

I'd like to try faber castell, I love trying to squeeze in all the detail I can, so I think they'd be good paired with prismacolors. ;u;
Exactly. It's really hard going in there, and you see something you want and then look at the price and NOPE. |D

This is great. Makes me think of an illustration you might see in an animal field guide.... now there's an idea.... a field guide of imaginary beasties.

The colouring in the fur is great.
